Getting from Here to There, Part 1: The Basics

As the first report on the Getting From from Here to There series, this piece outlines the costs and challenges of transportation infrastructure in the regions of Northern Ontario. It argues that external or social costs, such as health, safety, noise, accidents, or pollution, should be included when calculating the costs and benefits of transportation infrastructure. Challenges of such infrastructure in the regions of Northern Ontario include a vast geography that is sparsely populated, with nearly 11,000 kilometres of provincial highways, a great distance between communities, a rugged terrain with environmentally sensitive areas, extreme weather, and isolated communities.
